To live beside the open Pacific Ocean, in a warm and cosy cottage, and take in the stunning beauty of a world far removed from urban life is an experience of a lifetime.

Nootka Wilderness Retreat is a very special property located on the outer south coast of Nootka Island, which lies just off Vancouver Island's west coast. The property is situated on the Nootka Island Trail, a backcountry hiking trail which skirts along the coastline through temperate rainforest and across surf-pounded beaches.

Summertime is a great time to visit for calmer water, sunny days, playing in the surf, hiking along the beaches and enjoying the bonfire pit beneath the stars. In spring, the grey whales migrate along the coast, and may be seen rubbing themselves on the pebbled ocean floor. Fall is the time for fishing and mushroom lovers while winter storm watching inside the cosy home or braving the elements with good raingear.

The house is perched up on the sea cliff, facing south out to the Pacific Ocean with a sweeping pebble beach below. The dining room and living area offer gorgeous west views, and are open concept to the kitchen area. The cottage is comfortably furnished, with unique treasures from the beach and forest. Building in such a remote area is no easy feat, and the story of how the building came together is fascinating. For example, the lower walls are finished with the bark of one of the trees milled on site for framing.

There are 2 bedrooms in the cabin. The master bedroom is the entire upstairs floor, with a King bed, a twin bed and a double hide-a-bed. The King bed can be pulled apart into 2 twins to sleep 2 adults comfortably. The view from the King bed of the ocean, sunset and star-packed sky is truly awesome through the sliding glass doors leading out to a private deck. The soaker tub in the master bathroom feels like it is suspended in the branches of the trees with a sweeping vista.

The main floor bedroom has 4 twin beds with a separate door and deck leading to the wash house which contains a toilet, wash basin and shower. Satellite phone is available for emergencies, and we recommend bringing a laptop as internet access is the best way to communicate while here.

The owner, Pat Neligan, is a retired helicopter pilot who hosted the retreat as a Bed and Breakfast. He now resides in a separate house on the property, and is available to help out with the generator and power system since the accommodation is not on hydro. Pat also provides complimentary van pick-up and delivery from the north side of Nootka where both the Uchuck and floatplanes land.

Getting here is part of the adventure, as the options are a 30 minute flight onboard a floatplane, or water transport aboard the MV Uchuck III, a working coastal vessel. You may either leave your car in Gold River, a 45 minute drive from Campbell River, or we can help arrange a shuttle from your airport or ferry terminal. Quadra Island Vacation Rentals will help organize the travel logistics to get you and your supplies packed for the journey!

Our recommendation is to arrive by Uchuck, as you will be carrying a heavier load with groceries and personal gear, and fly back by floatplane when you have been lightened of food and beverages. From mid-July until mid-September, we require a minimum 6 night stay. Arrival is best on Monday, on the morning Uchuck, and departure is on Sunday afternoon by floatplane.

Shorter visits are possible during the rest of the year, and made easier by flying both ways.
